Aims:

To provide the basis of competence of operatives undertaking the operation and monitoring of domestic hot and
cold water systems in buildings.


Course Content:

On successful completion the student shall be able to understand the practical skills required for the monitoring of hot and cold water systems in buildings including;
*A basic knowledge of legionella bacteria and the risk factors which allow it
to proliferate in water systems
*Awareness of legal requirements, approved codes of practice, roles of duty holder,responsible person(s), consultants, contractors and landlords,and best practice in the control of legionella.
*Awareness of the key elements that make up domestic hot and cold water systems including storage tanks, cylinders & calorifiers, point-of-use heaters, TMV’s, showers, outlets, sentinel points,etc.
*Understand the requirements for the undertaking of physical inspections of water systems and installations and the importance of schematic diagrams.
*Understand the practical requirements for the implementation of legionella control regimes.
*Understand how to undertake and record water temperature monitoring in a range of water systems and installations.
*Awareness of the commoner alternative methods of controlling legionella in domestic water systems.
*Understand the basic principles of how to undertake and record the flushing of little used outlets and the
cleaning and descaling of shower heads and hoses.
*Understand the principles involved in the interpretation of water monitoring data and identify potential defects and inconsistencies in the management of the water systems.
