Aims:

The Water and Flood Awareness course is a classroom-based course with a practical demonstration, designed to provide personnel who may be working near water with sufficient knowledge to be aware of the hazards created by this environment and develop an understanding of water rescue techniques


Course Content:

Target audience;
Highway, Railway or bridge engineers, maintenance staff, flood control personnel,groundworkers, project managers, planners and health and safety officers. Any individual working within 3 meters of any water course.

• Personal Equipment.
• Floodwater dynamics and hazards.
• Hydrology
• Shallow water techniques.
• Pre-planning
• Risk assessments
• Incident /area Size up
• Site control
• Communications.
• Searching rivers and floods.
• Canals and locks
• Rescue considerations. Non-entry.
• Medical and decontamination considerations.

Delivery Method:
A combination of classroom-based activity, demonstrations, practical application and assessment.

On Completion of Course:
On completion of the course you will be aware of the hazards associated with water and have the knowledge to carry out basic land-based rescue techniques (shout, reach and throw). Have a working knowledge of the risk associated with water, know the basic principles and safety measures required to keep yourself and your colleagues safe.
